Villanelle #1: The Successful Hunt

The Successful Hunt

by: Kristel Marie Pujanes

 The moon eclipsed, it gives no light;

The hunters stalk their beastly prey,

No sound escapes the still, dark night.

The woods do tricks on this poor sight,

All shadows hurry out to play.

The moon eclipsed it gives no light.

Tonight, malice is to another, right.

There are no judgments made today.

No sound escapes the still, dark night.

A heart is wasted, weak tonight;

The hunted knows and runs away.

The moon eclipsed, it gives no light.

And who more to feel at least contrite

Than the one who caused the slight delay?

No sound escapes the still, dark night.

A shot rings out, and all delights—

The hunter falls dead as the prey.

The moon eclipsed it gives no light,

No sound escapes the still, dark night.

Details: A villanelle I wrote back in 2009. I haven’t written poetry in a while, but I have every intention of starting again. And yes, I’ve always wanted a by-line, so there you go. 😉

  1. I am so honored that you like my poetry and after reading this I am humbled by your praise because to have someone of your calibur of writing say they read mine and enjoy it is as you said-inspiring! Thank you so much this is an awesome poem (and beautiful) 🙂

    1. Wow. You really are too kind. 🙂 Awesome is another favorite word of mine, of course. Although I really can’t imagine why or how you could feel humbled by my praise, when you are a great writer. You write beautifully and I do look forward to reading more of your prose. 🙂

      1. I have written down my heart in so many of my poems because that is where they are created and lived-God gives us the gift then gives us the words and we just write them down-so I truly can’t take the credit for them but I will accept the praise for Him. Thank you again. We appreciate you so!

  2. You deserve all the above praise. You really write awesome poetry. I especially like The Successful Hunt and Rest for Eve. I’m glad you are going to get back into it again!
